WHY SUBMIT?

Build your showreel.

Explore your artistic voice. Connect with other creatives.

Dive into the world of Mini-DVs.

Release a film with a quick turnaround, direct to audiences.

THE TEAM

4 creatives per film, each paid a nominal fee of 50€: writer, actor, director, cinematographer.

Maximum 2 roles per person (2 roles = 2 fees).

No additional crew members allowed.

Co-writers and co-directors are permitted, but the team cannot exceed 4 people and the payments will not exceed 200€.

THE SCRIPT

  • 1 to 5 pages/minutes.

  • Only one speaking role (other characters may appear on screen).

The monologue may be of any genre: horror, drama, sci-fi, fantasy… It might be performed directly to camera, or to a character off-screen, or shot from far away. Maybe it takes the form of a surreal inner voice (no voiceovers). It could be a micro-short with a complete arc, or a scene from a longer screenplay. It may be strictly narrative, or experimental, or part-documentary; but there is always one lead actor.

THE KIT

The producers will provide:

  • 1 Mini-DV cam shooting in 4:3 aspect ratio

  • 1 external lavalier mic

  • Cables required to digitize the tape

  • Instructions for all of the above

The director is responsible for capturing sound on the shoot. Get creative with lighting, props, set design, hair & makeup and more!

Mini-DV footage has a 90s/00s feel, a bit lo-fi, a bit skater, a bit 28 Days Later. Sometimes you’ll get pixels dropping out of frame, glitches and weird pixelations.

THE TIMELINE

THE PHILOSOPHY

Writers Call-Out: submit your 1-5 page monologue.

  1. Greenlight: your script is accepted and we work with you to establish your release date and your team of creatives.

  2. Shoot: have fun with your one-shot no-budget production! You’re welcome to rehearse beforehand.

  3. Export: follow our instructions to digitize your tape. Choose your take, sync your sound. You may add titles or sound design but you may not hire additional crew. Any of the 4 creatives may be responsible for the export. The creative fees are paid upon delivery of the export.

  4. Release: your film premieres non-exclusively on our online platforms (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and our website).

The spirit of The Monologue Tapes is to bring creative voices together to experiment and practice with the medium at an elemental level. It’s an opportunity to try your hand at a new craft; work with someone new; connect with the filmmaking process in simple, fundamental steps.

While the fees are symbolic, they reflect our commitment to valuing your craft and our intention to create cinematic, high-quality short films.

It’s a small start, but a serious one.
